A world without waste water treatment plant (WWTP) is unimaginable – as far as we are concerned. Centuries ago, people lived without the benefit of WWTP, but today, it seems impossible. The people and the society in general greatly depend on WWTP not because of perceived dependence but because of sanitation and health purposes. Without these plants, variety of health issues and diseases will become more common, causing a plague of illnesses among humans. Fortunately, WWTPs are very common in any country today, assuring that people are not exposed to harmful and possibly fatal chemicals and fluids.
WWTPs are used in different sectors and industries, including agriculture, sewage treatment, and industrial sectors. In the agricultural sector, a WWTP is used in treatment of liquid animal waste, pesticide materials and residues, and the like. It is also used in disposal of the same. WWTPs are likewise used for sewage treatment purposes, for treatment and disposal of human waste, including household waste liquid. The manufacturing industry likewise greatly depend on WWTPs as they are used for treatment of wet wastes from different industrial sectors, such as factories, mining and quarrying sites, commercial establishments, and heavy industrial areas.
Among the sectors that largely depend on WWTPs is the industrial and manufacturing sector. Industrial waste water treatment encompasses mechanisms and procedures used in treating waters that are contaminated due to industrial or commercial activities or commonly called “wet wastes” before they are treated to be used in other purposes.
There are several particular industries that are dependent on the use of waste water treatment plant, including mining and quarrying, food, nuclear, iron and steel, and water treatment.
Mining and quarrying – This industry could not realize its full potential without the use of WWTPs. Common waste waters resulting from this industry include slurries of rock particles in the water. Common contaminants are oil, hydraulic oils, minerals present in native rock formations, among others. Contaminants are heightened during rains; mining and quarrying companies greatly depend on WWTPs. When a company gets the services of a bulk fuel delivery business, it can easily mine and quarry needed minerals for the industry.
Food industry – Although waste water from the food industry is biodegradable and nontoxic, it has high concentrations of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and suspended solids (SS). Because of this, water waste treatment is always necessary. Food processing usually requires high grade water, such as vegetable washing, which generate high concentration of particulate water and dissolved organics. When it comes to animal slaughter and processing, strong organic waste from the animals’ blood and gut contents are common. As it is, WWTPs are needed to treat waste waters not only to protect the workers and people but also the environment in general.
Nuclear – Nuclear wastes contain radioactive material, which are by-products of nuclear power generation as well as other applications of nuclear fission and technology. These wastes need to be treated and properly disposed as they are very dangerous to people and the environment. Radioactive wastes are hazardous to any form of life, thus, governments strictly regulate it to protect the people and the environment. As it is, the waste production from nuclear and radio-chemical industry is disposed with the help of sophisticated WWTPs.
Water treatment industry – With the help of bulk fuel delivery, water treatment facilities produce organic and mineral sediments or sludges resulting from filtration and sedimentation. It is common for industries dealing with water treatment to conduct various activities to achieve high quality water for different purposes. One of which is ion exchange with the use of natural and/or synthetic resins to remove calcium, magnesium, and carbonate ions from the water being treated.
A waste water treatment plant has many uses in the industrial sector, without it, health and sanitation will be of great concern to people, environment, and the communities.
