The Dubai International Film Festival (DIFF) 2017 recently witnessed what seems to be the most extravagant night premiering the latest from a galaxy far, far away; none other than “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”. The movie debut also wrapped up DIFF 2017 in all its glory with long queues of fans attending the festival, dressed as their favourite character and grabbing lucrative gifts which further fuelled excitement.

Rian Johnson; writer and director brought back the amazing cast, old and new while taking the reins where 2015’s epic The Force Awakens left. Fans who attended the festival had this amazing chance to welcome heroes from the Star Wars saga on the red carpet cosplay extravaganza with an opportunity to take exclusive photos.
Ever since the first trailer landed way back in April 2017, fans all over the world especially across the UAE waited anxiously for the moment. “Episode VIII – The Last Jedi” is hyped being the rule-breaking and most diverse Star Wars movie yet that unlocks ancient mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations that would shatter the core theme of all previous movies; in a good way that is!
The World Premiere Event in Los Angeles and launch events all over the world celebrated release of the long awaited sequel by paying tribute to the late Carrie Fisher aka Princess/General Leia Organa Solo. The iconic actress died last year in December following a cardiac arrest after recording all her scenes in the movie.
Cast & crew
“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is Carrie Fisher’s last movie where the movie itself marked the end of General Leia in a heart-breaking scene that balances everything in the most amazing way. Returning cast from the original trilogy includes Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Jimmy Vee as R2-D2 who replaced Kenny Baker after his death, Frank Oz voicing Yoda and Joonas Suotamo, replacing Peter Matthew as Chewbacca.
Joining them are the vibrant actors and actresses from The Force Awakens namely Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Gwendolyn Christie as Captain Phasma, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Oscar Isaac as Poe Dameron, Lupita Nyong’o as Maz Kanata, Domhnall Gleeson as General Hux and Andy Serkis as Supreme Leader Snoke.
New faces also joined the Star Wars universe bringing a new spark to the film such as the iconic Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Benicio Del Toro as DJ and Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico.
From the DIFF 2017
Besides the “Star Wars” red carpet event wrapping up Dubai Film Festival 2017, almost 140 short and feature length films were debuted in more than 38 different languages. The entries came from 51 countries including the GCC and MENA with screening all across Dubai, especially at Souk Madinat Jumeirah being the main location.
Others include VOX Cinemas, Mall of the Emirates and Galleria Mall. Organisers of the DIFF selected three individuals to receive the DIFF Honorary Awards namely Sir Patrick Stewart, Egyptian writer Wahid Hamed and Irfan Khan, the Bollywood actor.
The Dubai International Film Festival is known as one of the biggest UAE events to celebrate love of films as well as a platform to value new talent in form of writers, directors and actors.
